Santo Tomas Hospital (USTH) celebrates 74 years of dedicated service, excellent education, and advanced research in medicine and other health-related fields. USTH first opened its doors on February 15, 1945, with the opening of the Foundation Division (now popularly known as the UST Hospital Medical Unit). The following year, on March 7, 1946, the private sector opened, marked by an optimal event: the first patient admitted was a woman who had successfully given birth to a healthy baby girl.
In its 74 years, USTH has served those who have sought healing in its two branches: the private sector (paid patients are diagnosed and treated accordingly), and the medical unit (where extraordinary patients are confined). Practically all of the previous income is used to subsidize the latter expenses, which in the USTH is real proof that healing is a purpose and not an industry, not a profitable business.
The Medical Division maintains an Ambulatory Care Services (ACS) department (formerly the Outpatient Department – formerly known as OPD), a multidisciplinary specialty unit providing free consulting services to extraordinary patients in the fields of medicine, surgery, pediatrics, Dermatologists, obstetrics, and gynecology, and family medicine, Neurology and Psychology, Ophthalmology, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, and Pain Management. Furthermore, it acts as a referral center for a variety of patients with different medical conditions and complications. It operates clinics in various subdivisions of medicine and surgery: Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Endocrinology and Diabetes, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Rheumatology and Neurology, Surgery, Orthopedics, Orthopedics, Orthopedics Surgery, and thoracic and cardiac surgery. Patient education programs and minor therapies and ambulatory surgical interventions for ugly patients are available in this section. For the past 11 years (2006-2016), ACS has been serving approximately 1,346,300 patients daily, approximately 400 to 500 patients.
