In 1900 this medical college started as Novorossiyskiy State University’s medical faculty in Odessa. This soon became one of the most prestigious medical faculties in the Russian Empire. It managed to survive the difficult and turbulent period of the early years of the Russian revolution. In 1922’s this medical faculty transformed into the independent and autonomous Odessa State Medical Institute. Then it became Odessa State Medical University in the independent Ukrainian Republic after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine decided to merge this Medical University with the Medical Academy named after S.I. Georgievsky of Vernadsky CFU to create a new Odessa National Medical University in January 2019. This Medical University consists of 58 faculties with a student population of more than six thousand, including foreign students from different countries. The medium of study at this university is Russian, Ukrainian, and English languages. It has 100 clinical departments in the university, located at 63 medical and prophylactic institutions in the Odessa region. Each department of the university has its own Internet site with contains all essential methodological materials and disciplines available in the Ukrainian, Russian, and English languages.

Odessa National Medical University has a total of 62 departments dealing with the educational, scientific, and medical process of the university with approximately 840 teachers. There are 21 distinguished science and technology workers, 19 distinguished doctors, 3 distinguished employees of education, 3 distinguished inventors, innovators, 5 members of the Presidium and Expert Councils Department of Personnel Certification and the DES State Attestation Commission for Youth and Sports Ukraine, 47 members of specialized scientific councils. The ONMU has three museums available with all sorts of facilities.
Anatomical:
One of the oldest professional museums in Ukraine. It was established in 1900 on the initiative of professor M.O. Batuyev, the first head of the anatomy department. The museum has over 3,000 exhibits collected from the most remote parts of the world. Among them, there are hundreds of skulls and several dozen human skeletons – representatives of various nations and races, fragments of human bodies from Egyptian pyramids, and archaeological excavations. From 1910, many exhibits were made by students. The most valuable collection of the museum is the teaching unit of the Department of Human Anatomy.
Anatomicopathological:
It is one of the best professional museums in Ukraine. It was created in 1902 thanks to preparations from the collection of professors of Moscow State University. Later, the museum’s exposition was supplemented with macro preparations that were handed over to the department by pathologists from Odessa. Currently, the museum has over 2,500 unique exhibits that help students to study pathological anatomy in depth.
Historical:
Established in the late 1980s and reconstructed in 2000 to mark the university’s 100th anniversary, the museum reflects the milestones of the educational institution from its inception in 1900 to the present day. 4.5 thousand exhibits were presented to help students learn about the history of medicine.
Library:
The Odessa National Medical University’s Library is one of the oldest and biggest libraries in Ukraine. The library’s pride is the fund of the medical-scientific periodical editions, one of the biggest in Ukraine. This library contains 1 million books. This library is a modern information center that promotes educational and scientific teaching methods. Its branches are available in each hostel. There is an internet room in the library building where students can get the latest international information. Upon entering studies, each student receives a “library card” on the basis of which students can receive study books for the corresponding academic year period. At the beginning of the new academic year, students receive new books for that year. Publishing and printing are one of the main activities of this university. The powerful printing facilities, the qualified staff, the use of the latest information technologies allow the university to publish a variety of scientific, didactic, and methodological literature. 3 medical journals are published:
1. Odessa Medical Journal: 6 times a year;
2. Medical achievements and biology: twice a year;
3. Integrative anthropology – twice a year.
The University publishes unique textbooks and practical aids for all disciplines studied. The Medical Student Library is published in Russian, Ukrainian, English, and French with a total circulation of 15,000 copies per year. These books are studied by students of most of the Ukrainian medical institutions.
Odessa National Medical University has six hostels for students, there are separate hostel facilities available for male and female students. These hostels are provided with Free 24×7 gas, electricity, hot and cold water, and phone services to the students. These rooms are centrally heated and fully furnished with furniture and bedding in rooms provided by the hostel. Library and Reading rooms are available, separated recreation rooms and a gym are also available in every hostel. ONMU Hostels are provided with full security. Student cafeteria and canteen facilities are available with comfortable dining tables and multi cuisines. These residential sectors are surrounded by a green atmosphere.
Sports-Health Complex:
This university has good conditions not only for study but also for sports and recreation. There are outdoor sports activities like basketball, volleyball, football, available with grounds and all facilities. It has a sports-health complex on the Black Sea shore with a capacity of 500 students at a time can rest in summer. The ONMU complex has a total area of 2750 mtr, so it is available to everyone, not just students and teachers. The complex comprises an administration building with an area of 101 mtr, two dressing rooms 28.6 mtr with showers and toilets, offices for teachers, and a storage room with an audience for 1000 seats. The ONMU complex includes standard areas for playing mini-football, basketball, volleyball, tennis court, and outdoor sports equipment. All sports areas are equipped with modern lighting and an acoustic system, Swimming pool, gym, and A chess class are available.
