Tamil Nadu MBBS admission 2019 – MBBS Seats and NEET Cut off Marks

Now that the NEET 2019 exam is over, students have calculated their NEET score but are struggling to find out whether they will be able to get Government College because of the unavailability of the last year cut off details in the official Tamilnadu government medical counseling website, tnhealth.org.
There is lot of confusion about number of MBBS seats for which Tamilnadu students are eligible to apply for, reservation categories, NEET score cut off for their reservation category, tuition fees for various types of seats, and the list goes on and on. This article covers how to select the best medical college for your NEET score based on the last year cutoff for your reservation category and the expected increase in NEET score cut off for this year.

MBBSCouncil – provides admission counseling and guidance to Indian students who are participating in All India counseling, deemed university counseling or state medical admission counseling. MBBSCouncil collected MBBS allotment details published by respective state medical counseling
authorities during last year counseling. Based on this data, they are guiding students about counseling procedure, cut off details, and tips to identify good medical colleges, etc.
Before we discuss about the cutoff details for each reservation category, we should first try to
understand the total number of seats (out of the total 60000 MBBS seats available in India), Tamil Nadu students are eligible to apply.

MBBS Seat Allocation for All Quota Seats

Let’s first see the split-up of the MBBS seats. 15% of all government colleges in India are allotted by medical counseling committee under All India Quota. The rest 85% seats in government colleges are filled by the respective state counseling authority in which the college resides

When it comes to private colleges there are two types, self-financing colleges or deemed universities.
For self-financing private medical colleges, the respective state counseling authority is responsible for allotting MBBS seats. 50% of the MBBS seats in self-financing colleges are allotted to meritorious students based on their reservation category with annual tuition fees of Rs 4 lakhs. These seats are called as state quota seats. The rest 50% seats in self-financing colleges are divided as 35% for management and 15% for NRI. For non-minority colleges, the government quota seats goes up to 65% of the total MBBS seats available in that college.

When it comes to deemed universities, students from any state is eligible to get MBBS seat as counseling is conducted at All India level by medical counseling committee. 85% seats in deemed universities come under management quota and the rest 15% seats are allotted to NRI students.

How many seats in Each Quota for TN Students?

All India Quota seats, which is 15% seats in all government college comes to around 4950 seats. There are 25 government medical colleges in Tamilnadu. 85% of these seats in 25 government colleges come to around 2760 seats. These seats are allotted only for native Tamilnadu students. The management quota seats in all deemed universities in all states of India comes to around 5250 and the NRI quota seats comes to around 925.

Who is eligible for What Type of MBBS Seats?

85% of Tamilnadu government medical college seats and 100% of private medical colleges located in Tamil Nadu are available only for native Tamilnadu students. The below table summarize who is eligible to apply for which MBBS quota seats.

So total of 20215 seats are available for Tamilnadu students (Refer table-2) as of Sep-2020. Out of this 7550 seats are available only for native Tamilnadu students.
Even though, 4400 MBBS seats are available for Tamilnadu students, the tuition fee varies to greater extent depending on the quota. The table below outlines tuition fee details for each quota.

The competition is high for Tamilnadu state quota seats in government colleges and private colleges as the fees structure is affordable by Indian middle class families.

When it comes to management quota, not all parents can afford the tuition fees. Many Tamilnadu students choose to study MBBS in Philippines medical colleges. In fact more than 3000 Tamilnadu students are studying in various medical colleges in Philippines.

Will you get TN State Quota MBBS Seat for Your NEET Score?

The expected NEET 2020 cutoff for Tamilnadu government quota depends on two factors.
The first thing is the NEET 2020 question paper difficulty level. As the question paper difficulty level is little bit easier compared to the last year, the Tamilnadu NEET cut off is expected to increase for most of the reservation categories.
Last year 1.4 lakh students participated in NEET 2019 exam. Majority of these students appeared in NEET 2019 were repeaters. This will further increase the NEET cut off for 2020. So overall, we expect the NEET 2020 cutoff to increase by 30-40 marks for all reservation categories.

NEET 2019 Cut off for Tamilnadu Government Quota – Reservation Category Wise

The following table gives reservation category wise last year NEET cut off. The last student under BC category who got into Tamilnadu Government College scored 369 marks and the last students who got into Tamilnadu private medical college under BC category scored 335.

The NEET cutoff for this year is expected to be 30 marks more than the last year. If your NEET 2020 score is more than the score mentioned above plus 30 marks, then you have good chance to get government quota in government medical college or private medical college.
