Understanding the NEET UG 2026 Seat Matrix

Choosing the right college isn’t just about the rank, it’s about understanding how seats are distributed across different categories. The Seat Matrix determines your eligibility for specific seats and dictates which counseling process you must follow.

Here is the essential breakdown of seat distribution for the 2026 medical admission cycle.

1. Centralised Universities Seat distribution

Institutions like AIIMS, JIPMER, AMU (Aligarh Muslim University), and BHU (Banaras Hindu University) are managed centrally.

  • Seat Distribution: 100% of seats are filled through All India Counselling (MCC).
  • Key Fact: There is no “State Quota” for these colleges. Every qualified student in India competes on the same merit list for 100% of the available seats.

2. Government Medical Colleges Seat distribution

Standard State Government medical colleges divide their seats to balance national merit with regional representation:

  • 15% All India Quota (AIQ): Open to students from all over India; filled through MCC counseling.
  • 85% State Quota: Reserved for students who meet the specific domicile (residency) requirements of that state; filled through State-specific counseling.

3. Private Medical Colleges Seat distribution

Private colleges typically offer a mix of seats based on state regulations and management needs:

  • 85% Govt Quota & Management Quota: Includes seats at government-regulated fees (Govt Quota) and those at the college’s own fee structure (Management Quota).
  • 15% NRI Quota: Reserved specifically for Non-Resident Indians or NRI-sponsored candidates.

4. Deemed Universities Seat distribution

Deemed universities are autonomous and do not participate in state quota systems.

  • 85% Management Quota: Open to all Indian nationals based on NEET merit, regardless of their home state.
  • 15% NRI Quota: These Seas are reserved for NRI candidates.

Seat Distribution Summary Table

Government AIQ / State Quota 15% / 85%
Private Govt & Mgmt / NRI 85% / 15%
Deemed Mgmt Quota / NRI 85% / 15%
