- Government Medical College Amritsar, started in 1864 as a Medical School at Lahore (was the capital city of undivided Punjab) and it was later relocated to the holy city of Amritsar in 1920.
- In 1943 the medical school got upgraded status as Medical College.
- GMC Amritsar expanded with the help of following trust Pediatric Hospital set up by Ram Saran Dass Parkash Wati Kakkar Trust & TB Sanatorium, Free Eye and Ear Nose and Throat Hospital and separate Orthopedics ward with the help of other Charitable Trusts.

- The Amritsar Medical College & Hospital spread over an area 163 Acres and the built-up area of the college is 66000 sq.mt.
- 9 Storied Hospital complex(built up area of 30000 square meters).
- It has been built and attached to the college in the year 2012 which consists of Bebe Nanki Mother & Child Care Centre and the Guru Teg Bahadur Diagnostic & Super speciality which is partially funded by Government of India under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
- Additionally, 2 separate complexes also have been attached as College of Nursing and the Swami Vivekananda Drug De-addiction Centre to the college.
- GMC Amritsar has well-experienced 238 Doctors as faculty for all the Departments as Professor, Associate and Asst Professor and 655 Faculties as Senior Resident, Junior Resident and other Staff for the entire Department.
- The Library has a rich archive of 28777 books and journals with subscription to 78 foreign as well as 63 Indian journals.
