In 1946 B. J. Medical College was founded to replace the former B. J. Medical School with Shri. B. G. Kher the head of the Bombay government. This was the fulfillment of the vision of a forward-looking philanthropist Psi Byramjee Jeejeebhoy, to have an institution in Poona for the training of doctors and the provision of medical facilities on a par with those of Bombay. Her generosity and bounty made it possible for B.J. Medical School began operating in 1871 on land donated by him, and when the school was transferred to college in 1946, his name was retained somewhat.
The Institute’s staff company was merged with the new research company to enhance interdepartmental research and provide a forum for young research to present their work and publish it in the research company. The teaching of countless teachers has been canceled by several groups of students, who strive to emulate them. While some have entered academics, second generation teachers are handing down the legacy to the current generation of students, while others are providing a Yoman service to alleviate patient suffering in society. The last two decades mark the spread of the wings that his collaborative research through funding agencies such as ICMR and DST has taken off on a large scale. The BJMC multiple study protocols of the ACTG and IMPAACT research networks have been successfully implemented within the BJMC CTU.
