Government Medical College Chandigarh was started in 1991 in Sector 32 due to lacked a Medical College for MBBS and PG studies for the students belonging to Chandigarh. The Medical College has been attached with General Hospital, Sector 16 as a teaching hospital with an intake of 50 students, and now it has been increased to 100 from year 2013. The teaching Hospital is center for act as a Continuing Medical Education Programmes for various categories of technical and non-technical of different Medical disciplines working within and from other institutions/hospitals.

The GMCH Chandigarh emphasis is to provide teaching and training facilities of an exceptionally high standard to the medical students and is committed to continuous up gradation to provide highest standard medical education and healthcare. Since its establishment, the college has been consistently ranked among top 25 medical institutions in India and the students have consistently done well at various University examinations, and also number of students has secured placements in abroad.

MBBS Course

The MBBS course is a four and a half year period followed by a one year compulsory rotating residential internship. The lasting 12-month internship includes short courses in community health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, child health, orthopedics, emergency medicine and various specialties. All these are according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India. Admission to the MBBS program is based on the candidate marks obtained in the NEET-UG rank held by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

GMCH Chandigarh offers in medical stream at the undergraduate (UG) level and admits 100 students for the MBBS course annually.

Admission Procedure and Eligibility

Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. The maximum age limit to Study MBBS course is 25 years. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or bio-technology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for OBC Category)

Admission Procedure: It is compulsory for medical enthusiasts to appear for the National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after 12th grade who wish to get MBBS admission. All the Government, Private, Central and Deemed Universities will be based on NEET scores and the seats for all colleges / institutions / universities will be offered through counselling based on the eligibility Score/Rank, Preferences of colleges and seats available.

Admission to GMCH Chandigarh is done through All India Medical Counselling as AIQ for 15 % of MBBS seats and remaining through Tamil Nadu State medical counselling as State Quota 85% seats, conducted by state medical authorities.

The GMC & Hospital Chandigarh quilt covers area of 36.09 acre of land allotted by the Government and consists with Block A to J and along with Service, Parking and Power Substation buildings. Block-E is a Academic Block consists of 9 storied building with floor area covers as 42900Sq.mt and functioning many allied health sciences courses of Pre and Para-clinical departments.

GMCH, Chandigarh is totally computerization as both hospitals as well as in the administrative domain is a step in this direction. The GMCH faculties are highly qualified and experienced with has nearly 250 teaching staff in basic and clinical departments for 70 junior residentsl. There is an Examination Hall 01no with 250 seating capacity and Lecture theatre air-conditioned total 05nos of 200 capacities each in the college and 01no of 150 seating capacity at Hospital with fully equipped AV Aids.



GMCH has central library of build up area covers 2905Sq.mts with collection more than 14000 books and subscribed Journals of Indian 35 and foreign 89 available. In Addition, the library has Inside and Outside Reading room with available capacity of 130 persons and there is separate Reading room for Staff with seat capacity of 25persons.


GMCH has separate building for hostel accommodation for both boys and Girls students. The boys hostel consists of 3floor building with occupants 150 students and the Girls hostel 1&2 of 66 rooms’ with occupants of 105 students. Along with Rooms available to accommodate for Transit students 05 and for Interns occupants 52students. Moreover, there is separate Residential accommodation for Staff doctors, Resident and Nurses.

GMCH has Canteen at Block-B (OPD-Block) Level I & Block-C (Kitchen) available for services to the faculty, students, staff and out-patient, attendants & visitors etc.. In addition, to academic excellence, students of GMCH have consistently performed well at different cultural, literary and sports activities as it having outdoor and Indoor play fields.

Affiliated Hospitals

The GMCH is a large multi-disciplinary hospital with bedded strength of 834 for all the departments and it’s constructed as Block wise with the highest specifications available in the country So that the campus can be kept hygienically clean and relatively infection free.

Block-A is a Emergency Block consists of 5Floors and an area covers225000 sqft.which includes the 250 beds with emergency ward with various specialties, ICU, operation theatres, private wards and a canteen. Block-B is functioning of OPD consists of 6floors and total area covers 258000 Sqft. Block-C is a IPD Block of 7+2 Floors building and functioning departments like housing laundry, main kitchen, operation theatres-14nos and various wards. Block-D is a Administrative Block of 6 Floors building and an area covers 278000 Sqft. and having the many allied health sciences departments.

GMCH has developed well services across all specialties and is process for developing super-specialties to provide comprehensive and rehabilitative healthcare facilities to the residents of North India drawn from the urban/semi-urban and rural areas.

GMCH is situated in Union Territory of Chandigarh, India which offers the best educational facilities in the country as well as education hub for many institutions of national and international repute. The city also called ‘City Beautiful’ and located 240kms north of Delhi. The College & Hospital is located in Sector 32 and Residential Campus located in Sector 48 and the distance between these two parts is 3kms.

The college is situated in prime location and available frequent bus service from the entire corner of city. The Chandigarh railway station is main junction and reaching distance from the college is around 9kms and it’s well connected to all parts of India. The Chandigarh airport is the nearest and one of the main airport of India with the reaching distance of 5kms from the college.
