Government Medical College, Ernakulam is one of the premier medical colleges in the state of Kerala which is located in Kalamassery in Kochi and its formerly known as Cochin Medical College. It was a state institution founded by the Co-operative Academy of Professional Education under the Department of Cooperation, Govt. Kerala, founded in 1999. The medical college was taken over by the Kerala government as a pure government institution in 2013 with an intake of 110 students to the MBBS course every year. In addition, the campus consists of nursing college, nursing school, biomedical engineering courses, and OT courses are functioning.
From 2011, Cochin Medical College is registered under Kerala University of Health Sciences. This college is previously started at General Hospital Ernakulam and Indira Gandhi Cooperative Hospital. Now the institute is shining with excellent records in the academic and extracurricular fields that supported by excellent faculty and full-scale organizations

The MBBS course is a four and a half year period followed by a one year compulsory rotating residential internship. The lasting 12-month internship includes short courses in community health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, child health, orthopedics, emergency medicine and various specialties. All these are according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India. Admission to the MBBS program is based on the candidate marks obtained in the NEET-UG rank held by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Cochin Medical College offers MBBS -Under Graduate Course with a total intake of 110 seats annually and these are divided as 15% All India quota and 85% Kerala State Quota.
Admission Procedure and Eligibility
Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. The maximum age limit to Study MBBS course is 25 years. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or biotechnology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for OBC Category)
Admission Procedure: It is compulsory for medical enthusiasts to appear for the National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after 12th grade who wish to get MBBS admission. All the Government, Private, Central and Deemed Universities will be based on NEET scores and the seats for all colleges / institutions / universities will be offered through counselling based on the eligibility Score/Rank, Preferences of colleges and seats available.

Government Medical College, Ernakulam is spread over an area of 60 acres at Kalamassery in the suburbs of Ernakulam district of Kerala.
The central library has an area of 1600 square meters. The library is operating in two floors. The ground floor includes the stack room, the staff seating arrangement, the journal section, the binding section, the acquisition section and the computer section.
The first floor of the Library has a reading room for students and photocopying section.There are 8213 books more than 100 journals including National and International journals. The working hours of library from 10 am to 7 pm. There are fifty seats for teaching staff, 100 seats for students, 25 seats for Interns and 25 seats for PG students.The Library has 25 computers with Internet Nodes.
The library has an internet connection and is accessible to all teaching staff and students. Photocopy service is also available to staff and students. The books are organized in the library, subject wise and an American classification type is used for this purpose. The catalog of books is computerized with Alice for Windows, version 6.0 (standard module)
Examination and Lecture halls
GMCE has five well-furnished and spacious lecture halls, each with a seating capacity of over 100.88. It has the extraordinary feature like latest audio-visual equipment such as OHPs, LCD projectors, computers, microphones. There are seminar halls for each department. The auditorium has a seating capacity of 400 people. A specially designed exam hall for 200 students. There are demonstration rooms and research rooms for each department. All departments have their own libraries and labs with the latest equipment.
There is also a substation and 24-hour standby generator on campus. There are two deep water wells. Purified water is available around the clock. Various facilities for waste disposal include environmentally friendly combustion, disposal of assorted waste, and a biogas plant using hospital waste. Ernakulam District Co-operative Bank and its ATMs on campus, there are many banks with ATM facilities within walking distance of the college.
Accommodation is available for all students within the campus. There are separate hostel facilities for boys and girls having spacious rooms with three, double and single bed. Basic furniture is provided in the rooms. They also have common rooms for entertainment, reading rooms and TV rooms. 24 hours security is provided for all hostels. Each hostel has a mess hall that can seat more than 150 people and the Mess is run by students under a common dividing system. Students will be under the control of the Assistant Wardens and the Warden.
The GMCE accommodation offers facilities such as good water, sanitary accommodation, air conditioned visitor room and study room. The Ernakulam Medical College hostel has 143 rooms with 343 boys, 25 rooms with 75 girls, 50 rooms with 100 Interns, 52 rooms with 104 Residents and 36 rooms with 96 Nurses. There are common rooms for girls bous and girls in the campus.
The Institution specializes in sports activities that are monitored by an experienced and highly qualified Physical director. The campus has facilities for all outdoor sports such as cricket, football, volleyball, lawn tennis, throw ball, shuttle badminton and table tennis. Multi Gym facility is available to all students on campus. It has such facilities to develop individual skills and talents in arts and cultural activities.
