The Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, also known as Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, founded in 1951, and is the oldest medical college in Kerala. The Medical college was known in the earliest records as Medical College of Thiruvananthapuram, as it was the only medical institute in the state at the beginning.
In addition to the Medical College Hospital (MCH) on its campus there are many hospitals and institutions, including the College of Nursing and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Regional Cancer Center, Trivandrum Dental College etc..
The college follows the Kerala model and the state maintains health indices in parallel with developed countries, well above the national average. It has been studied by several agencies for use in other states of India and in developing countries. GMC Thiruvananthapuram has been upgraded as one of the All India Medical Sciences Institutes as it provides tertiary care to South India.

The MBBS course is a four and a half year period followed by a one year compulsory rotating residential internship. The lasting 12-month internship includes short courses in community health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, child health, orthopedics, emergency medicine and various specialties. All these are according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India. Admission to the MBBS program is based on the candidate marks obtained in the NEET-UG rank held by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Thiruvananthapuram Medical College offers 250 MBBS -Under Graduate Course with total intake of seats annually and these are divided as 15% All India quota and 85% for Kerala State Quota.
Admission Procedure and Eligibility
Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. The maximum age limit to Study MBBS course is 25 years. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or biotechnology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for OBC Category)
Admission Procedure: It is compulsory for medical enthusiasts to appear for the National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after 12th grade who wish to get MBBS admission. All the Government, Private, Central and Deemed Universities will be based on NEET scores and the seats for all colleges / institutions / universities will be offered through counselling based on the eligibility Score/Rank, Preferences of colleges and seats available.
Admission to Govt Medical college, Thiruvananthapuram is done through All India Medical Counselling as All India quota 15 % and remaining through Kerala State medical counseling as State quota 85% conducted by state medical authorities.

Thiruvananthapuram Medical College campus includes many hospitals and institutions such as the College of Nursing and Pharmaceutical Sciences,, Thiruvananthapuram Dental College, Regional Cancer Center, Sri Chitra Thirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology and Government of India, Priyadarshini Institute. Shri Avittom Thirunal Hospital for Auxiliary Medical Sciences and Women and Children. The Regional Ophthalmology Institute, a part of the college, is being upgraded to a nationally recognized independent institution. The School of Optometry is also on campus.
The GMC Library is located in the administrative section of the Thiruvananthapuram Library, and contains books and educational magazines related to medicine and related sciences. There is 2 Lecture Theatre is available in Medical College which has the capacity for 250 students each. 1. GMC Medical College Hospital
GMC Medical College Hospital provides comprehensive health care to patients. It is the largest multi-specialty hospital in South Kerala and serves the districts of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam and adjacent districts of Tamil Nadu. This hospital includes a main hospital block, trauma care and outpatient department. The hospital, which has 747 beds, allows 3128 patients per day and provides 7,500,000 outpatient consultations per year.
The outpatient block houses includes outpatient wings of medical and surgical specialties a dispensary and resident and graduate homes. This hospital doing averages 55 major and 125 minor operations and 35 vaginal deliveries and 15 caesarean sections per day. 90 to 95 percent beds are occupied throughout the year.
2. Sree Avittom Thirunal Hospital
The women’s and children’s hospital was established in 1952. It was built by the royal family of Travancore to commemorate the death of prince Sri Avitom Thirunal who died of rheumatism at the age of eight. The hospital is houses to Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics. The OB-GYN department manages postpartum, midwifery counseling, infertility, trophoblastic, adolescent and vesicular-mole clinics and joint research centers of WHO and the Indian Medical Research Council. The hospital provides child care in cardiology, neurology, nephrology, genetics, surgery and psychiatry, and has one of the highest delivery rates in Kerala.

The Medical college is situated in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala state. It is formerly known as Trivandrum. Thiruvananthapuram city is a major tourist attraction in Kerala. It is best known for the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Kovalam beach and Varkala beaches, and Western Ghats of Ponmudi and Agasthyamala and the backwaters of Poovar and Anchuthengu.
Thiruvananthapuram has a well developed road transport infrastructure and Government Medical college, is located about 6 km or 3.7 miles from the Thiruvananthapuram central Railway Junction and the KSRTC central bus station. There is the Chalakuzhy road in front of the hospital, which meets NH544 near Pattom. The Medical college is about 5 kilometers or 3.1 miles from Thiruvananthapuram International Airport and can get 15min travel to reach the college.
