  • The Union Territory of Puducherry, with a total population of 1,250, 000, was at one time-dependent for medical education and tertiary level medical care totally on JIPMER, which is a central institute that provides limited seats for local candidates.

  • Hence the territorial government decided to start a new medical college of its own to provide better opportunities for students from Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam.So the Annual Plan of 1997-1998, The Puducherry Government planned to establish a Medical College in Puducherry.
  • In 2010 the college was named Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMC&RI) and was approved permission by the Medical Council of India to enrol1 150 medical students annually.

Infrastructure

  • Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute is housed in a unitary campus next to its teaching hospital with sufficient room for potential expansion.
    At present it having ground floor Plus four floors.
  • This College building especially for 150 students each year is planned with most advanced laboratory equipments and in a very gorgeous setting for the future doctors of this country.
  • The building is designed as per MCI norms with an area of 3.38 lakh square feet built up area (5 storeys).
    Two more floors will be constructed to provide accommodation for PG Course in future.
  • As per the norms of Medical Council of India, Library Block which have five floors also a part of this building.
  • Library –
    Indira Gandhi Medical College having a very good and comfortable reading library in 5 storey building with 5000 books at present and subscribing nearly 28 Indian journals and 8 foreign journals and 40 computer terminals with internet facility.

Hostel

  • There are four hostel blocks, including 104 rooms with 19 bath attached rooms and 85 double rooms, which can also be used for single occupancy.
    Four students stay in one room Hostel blocks are built.
  • Each building covers a total area of 4702 square meters and is identical to the entire ground floor with a 4-storey configuration.
    Two blocks were selected for “Girls” and the remaining 2 were assigned to the “Boys” section.
  • The brief outlines of the accommodation schedule in each hostel block.
    The Ground Floor is a total of 932 square meters of main entrance / portico, waiting area, office room & warden’s flat, 3 single bed unit and 15 double bed unit.
  • The first floor, the second floor, the third floor and the fourth floor are approximately 895 square meters with a waiting area & lounge, 4 single bed unit and 17 double bed units.
  • Recreation Facilities – The Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute provides such recreation facilities for students extracurricular like Outdoor games such as Cricket, Football, Ball Badminton and Volleyball.
  • This Institute has a permanent multi-functional sports field in accordance with national standards.
    The campus has a well-equipped Gymnasium with well trained staff.

Affiliated Hospitals

  • The Hospital is functioning with 415 beds which is at present having ground and second floor, then expansion is going on for a further three-story.
  • State of the art Hospital building with 750 beds initially (5- storey) over 5.09 lakh square feet built-up area, to be increased to 1000 beds (8-storey) in the future.
  • 15 Operation Theaters (O.Ts) with state-of-the-art ICUs are a part of the initial stage.
  • Indira Gandhi Medical Institute planned to create 18 Specialty Operation Theaters for six super-specialty departments to come up in the future.
  •  Our faculties are specifically trained at NTTC, JIPMER, and Regional FAIMER Institutes in a variety of pedagogy techniques.
  • Moreover regular learning in the classrooms and laboratories, students are also taken to the community to carry out various field research activities, problem-oriented and community-based training of public health, and various other field visits.
  • Health Centres – Primary Health Centers and Rural/Urban Health Training Centers.
  • Rural Health Training Centers I –Karikkalampakkam; located 18 km from the college.
  • Urban Health Training Centers – Lawspet; located 4 km from the college.

  •  The northern side of the institute is abutting the NH 66 to Tindivanam at half Km distance and the road to western side leads to villupuram via Ousteri Lake, a tourist area.
  • The Villupuram highway NH 45 A is at 1 Km away from the 15 acre lake behind the college space.
    The Area is surrounded by densely populated residential areas.
  • This Institute is well connected by Road and Train networks as the Subaiya Nagar bus stand is located 1km from the college which is about 13 minutes to travel.
  • The Nearest Railway station to this medical college is 134 km distance which is about 134 km to travel via NH32 Road.
  • And the distance from Pondicherry Airport to this medical college is 4.3 km distance with a travel time of 12 min’s via Vazhudavoor Road.
