The Government of Tamil Nadu wishes of the Transport Corporation employees to have a Medical College and Hospital to provide special medical treatment to the people of the area, the transport workers and their families. Accordingly, the Government has authorized the acquisition of 327.66 acres of Tuberculosis Sanatorium by the Road Transport Institute to start a Medical College in Perundurai, Erode District since 1992.
It primarily aims to train medical students through a primary healthcare approach with a particular emphasis on health promotion, disease prevention, early detection, diagnosis and disease management including the rehabilitation and social integration of transport workers, their families and rural residents.

The MBBS course is a four and a half year period followed by a one year compulsory rotating residential internship.
The lasting 12-month internship includes short courses in community health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, child health, orthopedics, emergency medicine, and various specialties. All these are according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India. Admission to the MBBS program is based on the candidate marks obtained in the NEET-UG rank held by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
IRT Perundurai Government Medical College Erode offers 100 MBBS courses a yearly which is divided into 15% All India Quota (AIQ) and the remaining 85% for Tamilnadu State Quota (SQ).
Admission Procedure and Eligibility
Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. The maximum age limit to Study MBBS course is 25 years. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or biotechnology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for OBC Category) to study Medical Course.
Admission Procedure: It is compulsory for medical enthusiasts to appear for the National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after 12th grade who wish to get MBBS admission. All the Government, Private, Central and Deemed Universities will be based on NEET scores and the seats for all colleges / institutions / universities will be offered through counselling based on the eligibility Score/Rank, Preferences of colleges and seats available.
Admission to IRT Medical College admission is done through All India Medical Counselling as 15% for All India Quota and balance through Tamil Nadu State medical counselling as State Quota 85% of Seats conducted by state medical authorities.

The IRT Government Medical College campus spans over 327 acres, with a total area of over 40,000 sq. Mt. The college buildings are built on over 16,000 sq with separate blocks of hostel and residential buildings and hospital buildings, including the OPD block available on over 25,000 sq. This Medical College built with all kinds of structures in accordance with the requirements of MCI.
The College has three examination rooms available with an area of 15 980 sqm. and available capacity for 500 students. There are four lecture halls in the college building, each with a capacity of 120 people. One lecture hall located in the hospital building with a capacity of 150 seats and all amenities. These are built-in gallery types with audio and video devices. Individual common rooms are available for male and female students with an area of 150 sqm in each with attached toilets.
This Medical College Central Library is 1640 sq m. and fully air-conditioned facilities. It has a separate reading room, a bunk room and fully air-conditioned. An internal reading room with 150 seats for students and an outdoor reading room with 110 seats for students are available. Separate reading rooms are available for employees and PG students. This library has a total of 10,044 books, 71 Indian and 30 foreign magazines. The university’s digital library has 10 computers and all amenities. A central photography section is also available with all types of equipment and staff facilities.
IRT Perundurai A government medical College Hostel complex and residential complex was built on an area of 11,795 sq m on the campus of the university. This complex has separate hostels for students and boys. The Boys’ Hostel has 104 rooms with accommodation for individual and double and triple students, as well as comfortable bedding, good water equipment, and toilets. The girl’s hostel also has 94 rooms with facilities like the previous hostel. These hostels have a good canteen with hygienic food and comfortable dining areas.
There is a PG hostel with 53 rooms and separate shelters for nurses with 127 rooms. On this campus, there are also residential facilities for teachers and non-teachers. Students are monitored by shelter guards. complete student safety is monitored and ratified by the Gender Harassment Committee and the Ragging Prevention Committee. Separate, air-conditioned guest rooms and air-conditioned study rooms with computer and internet access are available.
The IRT Government Medical College Hospital in Perundurai is the teaching hospital of this medical college. This hospital has 470 beds and is built on over 14 576 sq m. Every day, approximately 1,000 outpatient patients visit here, and 80% of the beds are occupied by hospital care. The hospital is equipped with the latest medical facilities and multi-medication care.

General medicine and general surgery have 120 beds in each. Pediatrics, orthopedics, obstetrics, and gynecology with over 60 beds in each. TB and Respiratory medicine, psychiatry, ENT, dermatology, and ophthalmology have 10 beds. The central clinical laboratory of this hospital is subject to control within the pathology department, and separate sections are available, such as microbiology, hematology and biochemistry departments. There are 9 operating rooms in this hospital, including 7 large and 2 for smaller facilities. Intensive care units such as ICCU, ICU with 5 beds, SICU and NICU have 5 beds each. These units are fully air-conditioned and central devices for oxygen supply, monitor, fan and pulse oximeter are available.

How to Reach
The IRT Government Medical College Hospital is located in Perundurai, Erode District, about 400 kilometers southwest of the state capital Chennai. Erode City has the second largest SIPCOT in Asia and the seventh largest urban agglomeration in the state of Tamil Nadu. It also has the second largest bus station complex for the State of Tamil Nadu, which operates long-distance buses connecting major cities in and around the state.
Perundurai is located 18km from Erode town and is a good connection with the Road and Rail network, which has two Bus Terminus as the Old and New Bus stand, and the college is 2.5km and 3.0km respectivily and takes less than 15 minutes to reach the college .
The Erode Train Station is the main railroad crossing in Tamilnadu and is connected to all the cities in the country, located 20 km from the college in a 45-minute drive. In addition, Perudurai also has a train station within a 10-minute drive of 4km. The nearest airport of the college is Coimbatore International Airport, which has good links with domestic and international cities, located 90km with a 1:30hours journey.
