Government Kilpauk Medical College opened in 1960, is the premier medical teaching institution in South India that trains medical students every year. In 1924, the institute was started as a Government Indian Medical School and in 1948, the Medical School was renamed Indian College of Medicine and the G.C.I.M degree (Graduate of the College of Indigenous Medicine) was confirmed in its graduates. Subsequently the term Indigenous was replaced by Integrated, indicating that candidates had been trained in the GCIM course for Indigenous and advanced medicine.
In 1960, the Integrated Medicine College became the Government Kilpauk Medical College, with an annual Girls intake of 75 students only. A few years later it became a co-educational institute, which takes in about 100 students annually. In the 1970s, many diploma, PG degree courses and super specialty courses were started.
KMC Chennai has expanded over the years with new postgraduate courses, new disciplines and new infrastructure. The college will become one of the leading service organizations in the region for years to come.
