A beloved dream of a Medical College in Madurai the Temple City – it became a reality in the year 1954 with the great efforts of the late National Leader Thiru K. Kamaraj. The fifty students who were accepted into the first batch were affectionately referred to as the “FIRST FIFTY”. The University of Madras to which this Institute was associated gave permanent recognition to this College in the year 1954. This College is not lagging behind in caring for the rural population, lungs of India, as the students (Surgeons House) and the Medical staff participate in the Rural Mobile Service team under the ‘ROME’ scheme which visits the nearby rural centers daily.
The Institute celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1980. And in 2004, the staff and students of this prestigious Institute have a responsibility to uphold the reputation of this Institute and to strain every nerve of it to make the Institute one of the best throughout the world as the College celebrates its Golden Jubilee.
The remarkable growth of the Institute in various branches over the span of 65 years is commendable and many prominent Madurai citizens also played a vital role in the development of this Institute. The Institute has shown tremendous improvement in the provision of Higher Education in the Medical field. In turn, the Patient Care with sophisticated Modern Techniques and Equipment was eliminated. MMC has the Student community to enhance their Wisdom in Medicine and Surgery.
The MBBS course is a four and a half year period followed by a one year compulsory rotating residential internship.
The lasting 12-month internship includes short courses in community health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, child health, orthopedics, emergency medicine, and various specialties. All these are according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India. Admission to the MBBS program is based on the candidate marks obtained in the NEET-UG rank held by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Madurai Government Medical College has 150 seats in MBBS Course which are divided as 15% for All India Quota and 85% for TamilNadu State Quota.
Admission Procedure and Eligibility
Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. The maximum age limit to Study MBBS course is 25 years. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or bio-technology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for OBC Category)
Admission Procedure: It is compulsory for medical enthusiasts to appear for the National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after 12th grade who wish to get MBBS admission. All the Government, Private, Central and Deemed Universities will be based on NEET scores and the seats for all colleges / institutions / universities will be offered through counselling based on the eligibility Score/Rank, Preferences of colleges and seats available.
Admission to GMC, Madurai is doner through All India Medical Counselling as All India Quota for 15% MBBS seats) and balance through Tamilnadu State medical counselling as State Quota of 85% seats, which is conducted by state medical authorities.

Madurai Govt Medical College has a Modern – Furnished and well-established Auditorium in the built-up area of 1100 sq-metres for conducting college functions and meetings and various events with a Seating Capacity of 750 in the ground and about 300 in the Balcony. The exam hall can accommodate 750 students which are built up in 300 square meters.
Madurai Medical College provides Individual Hostel Facilities for Boys and Girls Students in the College Campus, which is Maintain and Protected by the Male and Female Wardens. Government Medical College is located in Madurai city in the state of Tamil Nadu and its third largest city in Tamil Nadu and the 44th most populous city in India. The city also known as Temple city is the cultural capital and has a number of historic monuments, which is also an important industrial and educational hub in Southern Tamil Nadu.
The Madurai city Road network is well connected throughout the country, having many national highways passing through, and three bus terminals serving the city, the college is located 3 km from MGR Bus Terminus and 5km from Periyar Bus Terminal, and can often be available as local transportation such as buses, autos and drop-in taxis to get to college around a clock.
