The Padanilam Welfare Trust Complex, established in 1998, consists of the College of Medicine, College of Nursing, Dental College, College of Allied Health Sciences, and Schools. The Sree Mookambika Institute was started in 2006 under the belief that it is a mission to provide compassionate and excellent quality medical services to this area of Kanya Kumari district where there is a shortage of healthcare services.
The MBBS course is a four and a half year period followed by a one year compulsory rotating residential internship. The lasting 12-month internship includes short courses in community health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, child health, orthopedics, emergency medicine and various specialties. All these are according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India. Admission to the MBBS program is based on the candidate marks obtained in the NEET-UG rank held by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Admission Procedure and Eligibility
Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or biotechnology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of OBC/SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for PH Category) to study Medical Course.
Admission Procedure: It is compulsory for medical aspirants to appear for the National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after 12th grade who wish to get MBBS admission. All the Government, Private, Central and Deemed Universities will be based on NEET scores and the seats for all colleges / institutions / universities will be offered through counselling based on the eligibility Score/Rank, Preferences of colleges and seats available.
Admission to Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences is done through Management/NRI Quota as 50% and remaining through Tamil Nadu State Quota, which is conducted by state medical authorities.

Sree Mookambika Medical College campus is spread over 73 acres with beautiful landscapes. A total of 20,109 sqm of college buildings have been constructed. The Medical College Hospital and OPD buildings are built on 34,903 sqm, and the rest areas are hostel blocks. The Government Medical College has a separate hostel and residential complex for students and staff of over 32,333 sqm.
The SMMC has two examination halls, 500 square meters in area, each of which has a capacity of 250 students. The air conditioning auditorium is 60,000 square feet in size, with a large stage and 2500 seat capacity. It is common to all colleges in the campus and hosts cultural events, annual days, meetings, CMEs, conferences and inter-college events.This Medical College has a total of six lecture halls. The college building has five lecture halls with a capacity of 120 students each. There is a lecture hall available with 150 seating capacity in hospital building. These lecture halls are built as a gallery type with air conditioning and audio and video facilities. Each of the attached toilet facilities has separate common rooms of 150 square meters.
The library is 2000 square metres designed with plenty of natural light that supports quiet individual and group study. It is fully automated with a book bank, question bank, online journals and a photocopy machine. There are two reading rooms inside and outside. Each of these reading rooms has a capacity of 100 students. There are separate reading rooms for PG students and staff. The library contains a total of 19,000 medical textbooks, 70 Indian journals and 70 foreign journals. In the e-library section, it has 25 computers. Numerous educational videos describing surgical procedures, medical conditions and case studies are recorded and available as audio/video tapes and small disks. The library is open 7 days a week from 8:00 am to 8:30 pm.
There are 6 hostels inside the campus, 3 for female UG students, CRRIs and postgraduates. Similarly, there are 3 hostels for male students. These hostels are under the care of a warden and a personal caretaker for each hostel building. There are a total of 676 rooms for UGs, 93 rooms for PGs and 106 rooms for interns. The rooms are single occupancy attached to toilet / bath and are provided with a cot, cupboard, table and chair. There is a complete buffet chamber, fully automated kitchen for dorm students with a reverse osmosis water treatment system, 24-hour power supply with generator backup, separate television viewing hall and a reading room. With all the leading newspapers and magazines, hostel has telephone booth, indoor games and playground, well equipped gymnasium.
Sree Mookambika Institute Hospital is spread over more than 34,000 sqmts. Over 1100 outpatients visit here everyday on average, with a total of 530 beds for in-patients. The inpatient facility is equipped with intensive care units for surgery, medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics. Central Oxygen Supply Central Division Facility and Ventilators, Laboratory Service is also available. The cardiology department was launched in 2011. Initially it was launched as a non-intervention sector with facilities including OPD Consulting, ECG, ECHO and TMT. As the department gradually attracted more patients from all over Kanyakumari, the management decided to facilitate the intervention in the department.
There are 120 beds in each of general medicine and general surgery. There are more than 60 beds in each of paediatrics, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology. Tuberculosis and respiratory medicine and psychiatry have 20 beds.. ENT, Dermatology and Ophthalmology have 30 beds each. The hospital’s central medical laboratory is controlled by the Department of Pathology and has separate departments such as the Departments of Microbiology, Hematology and Biochemistry. The hospital has 12 operating theatres, 10 for Major and 2 for Minor Operations. Kidney Transplant Services are launched in 2017.

Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences is located Kulasekharam in Kanyakumari District, 774 kms from chennai (Tamilnadu capital) and 70 Kms from Trivandrum (Kerala capital). Kanyakumari is also known as Cape Comorin and is the southernmost point of the Subcontinent India.
The nearest town of the college is Nagercoil and it has a good connection with the road network with all the cities in the states, and the college from this town is about 30 kms with a 45 minute drive. Kanyakumari is directly connected by train to almost all metropolitan cities in India and from colleges within 50 Kms of 1: 30 hours. The other Nagercoil Railway junction is 30 kms away which can be reached within 45 minutes. The nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, 56 km from the college and is connected to all major Domestic and International cities and takes 1: 30 hours.
