T.D Medical college was started in 1963 under the patronage of the Thirumala Devaswom Temple at Anantha Narayana Puram of Alappuzha. Initially, the management of the college was under a trust called T.D Medical College Trust. Later, the Trust ran into financial problems and the Kerala Government came forward and took over the management of the institution from 1967. Thus it has become the 4th Government Medical College in Kerala state.
The College was functioning only with two wings until 1967 and the central portion housing the library on the ground floor and the auditorium on the first floor were constructed by the Government which was completed in 1971. As per the MCI regulations and demands, the Medical College was shifted to a newly constructed building at Neerkunnam in 1991.
