T.D Medical college was started in 1963 under the patronage of the Thirumala Devaswom Temple at Anantha Narayana Puram of Alappuzha. Initially, the management of the college was under a trust called T.D Medical College Trust. Later, the Trust ran into financial problems and the Kerala Government came forward and took over the management of the institution from 1967. Thus it has become the 4th Government Medical College in Kerala state.
A total of 145 acres of land was purchased at Vandanam, in the coastal belt for the future development of the college campus, to include the hospitals, hostels, and residential quarters. The construction of the building started in March 1963 and the classes started in August 1963.
The College was functioning only with two wings until 1967 and the central portion housing the library on the ground floor and the auditorium on the first floor were constructed by the Government which was completed in 1971. As per the MCI regulations and demands, the Medical College was shifted to a newly constructed building at Neerkunnam in 1991.
T.D. Medical College, Alappuzha begin with annually intake seats of 50 numbers for the M.B.B.S course, and it was raised to 100 as per the recommendation of the MCI in 1979. Now the number of seats has risen to 150 from the academic year 2007-2008 onwards.

T.D. Medical College, Alappuzha offers UG (MBBS) and PG Courses. Total annual intake seats for UG is 150. Out of these 23 seats are allotted under All India Quota by Medical Counselling Committee and the remaining 127 MBBS seats are allotted by Kerala Counselling Authority.
Admission Procedure and Eligibility
Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. The maximum age limit to Study MBBS course in TD Medical college is 25 years. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or bio-technology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for OBC Category)
Admission to TD Govt Medical College, Alappuzha is done either through All India Medical Counselling for All India Quota(15% of MBBS seats) or through Kerala State medical counselling(85% quota) conducted by Kerala state medical authority

The college and hospital are situated in a campus having an area of 162 acres, out of which 60 acres of land the College hospitals whole departments were functioning with a floor area of about 28,000 Sq.m. In 2005, the college was shifted to the newly constructed block of A & B of Medical College Hospital Complex at Vandanam and followed by the Medicine and allied specialities have been shifted to new blocks such as D&E, IP wards at a new hospital complex in 2007.
The College has been achieved tremendous pace after shifting in a new building and within 3 years, constructed and functioning of another 5 Medical Departments in three major blocks J1- J2- J3 diagnostic blocks, C&F block, and Surgical K blocks. There is sufficient space for all types of future developments and there is a huge scope for developing this college as a Centre of Excellence in various fields of Modern Medicine.
The Medical College is having state of the art infrastructural facilities and it is being equipped with latest Medical Equipment, teaching aids, and most modern R & D facilities.
Faculty and Staff
T.D. Medical College has well qualified and Experienced faculty support for teaching in various 39 departments around 500 staff as Professors, Assistant/Associate Professor, Sr./Jr. Resident & Tutors.
The college has 4 grounds for Basket Ball, Foot Ball, Volley Ball and Cricket. It also has indoor stadium with gymnasium. Shuttle Badminton is also available.
The Hostel is located within the College Campus, Separate for boys and Girls and is fully furnished with all the modern facilities. The hostel has capacity to accommodate 850 students. There is separate hostel facility for interns, residents and nurses. The facilities include Internet, A/c, Laundry and Power Back unit and fees for Hostel charge Rs. 3000 per month.
T.D. Medical College has Central Library, situated in main administrative block ground floor and consists of 7198 sq.feet area including General Reference Section, Journal Section, Reading Rooms, Air-conditioned Internet Section, Reprographic Section, and Book Bank Section.
The Library has a total collection of books around 20,362, Reference Books-550, Text Books-16580, Book Bank-3232, Non-book materials CD-56, Floppy Disc-10 and Subscribing Foreign Journals 15 & Indian Journals 19 annually.
Parent Teachers Association
The College has Parent Teachers Association constituted in the year 1988 and its assists the college authorities to maintain a discipline of students and to carry out various students’ welfare programmes. It also helps to maintain a good teacher-parent relationship and promote the other organisations involved in student activities.
T.D. Medical College Hospital, Alappuzha was being used for the clinical training of the students. The Hospital was developed by the construction of additional buildings to provide sufficient beds for meeting the teaching requirements of the college. Subsequently, in January 1973 the whole of the district hospital was handed over to the Principal, T.D. Medical College as this was required for the approval of the College by the Indian Medical Council.
The District Hospital has thus become the Medical College Hospital under the administrative control of the Principal, T.D. Medical College, Alappuzha, and it is being utilised for the clinical training of the students as well as for the house surgeons. The hospital has bed strength of 1050.
The day to day affairs of the Hospital is managed by the Hospital Development Committee. The excess of expenditure over income is met by the Government of Kerala through Budget allocation of funds under Plan and Non-Plan heads. This is necessary for the reason that this Hospital being a Government concern for meeting social obligations alone. Therefore, the actual number of inpatients and outpatients of this Hospital is much more than its capacity to accommodate.
