CRMI – One year compulsory rotating medical internship for medical graduates

Every medical graduate after completing 4.5 years of MBBS course, shall be required to undergo a compulsory rotating medical internship (CRMI) for a minimum period of twelve months. After passing final year MBBS Examination or NEXT Step 1 examination, candidate become eligible for the award of the MBBS degree only after the completion of internship by the respective Medical Universities.

Medical studies in India is one of the hard processes for getting admission, studying and completion. Even before and after study of medicine there are different procedures. One of the important processes for completing the Medical studies is compulsory rotating medical internship (CRMI)) or Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI).

What is CRMI:

Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship refers to mandatory work in a teaching hospital attached to a medical college or in any other approved teaching hospitals, for a particular period required to complete study in the particular state or institution. The Medical studies will complete with its rotation ship works and the student is awarded a registration certificate for CRMI.

How much period students should do their CRMI:

Students shall be required to undergo a compulsory rotating medical internship (CRMI) for a minimum period of twelve months after passing the final examination of MBBS.

After the NEXT Phase -I examination or final year MBBS Examination or Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), medical students need to undergo Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship during which medical graduates will be posted in various departments for internship training as follows.

• Internal Medicine – 2 Months
• General Surgery – 2 months
• Gynecology and Obstetrics – 2 months
• Pediatrics – 1 month
• Preventive and Social Medicine: 3 months

  • Family Welfare Clinic
  • Health Education Unit
  • Primary Health Centers
  • Urban Health Center
• Orthopedics – 15 days
• ENT: 15 days
• Ophthalmology: 15 days
• Elective Posting (Anesthesia/Psychiatry/Derma/Radiology): 15 days each

Will CRMI period be extended?

The compulsory rotating medical internship may be extended appropriately by a reasonable period on recommendation by the College/Medical University. Based on the specific reasons like insufficient period of attendance, any exigency such as disasters or unforeseen circumstances in the country as notified by the Government of India or any competent authority.

Permitted days of leave:

CRMI students shall be permitted a maximum of fifteen days leave with prior permission, during the entire period of internship but the fifteen days cannot be availed during any of the one week or two weeks.

Lady Interns may be permitted Maternity Leave according to prevailing rules and regulations of the Central or State Government and also sometimes Male interns may be permitted paternity leave for two weeks. Medical Leave shall be included within the fifteen days of normal leave and medical leave beyond this period shall be recommended only by a duly constituted Medical Board.

Do Medical students get paid for CRMI ?

All Candidates who undergo internship are entitled for monthly stipend as fixed by the state medical authority where the college is located. The interns get nominal amount as stipend during internship. Central Government run Medical Colleges pay the highest monthly stipend.

What If candidates could not complete CRMI ?

Students who refuse to do their compulsory rotating medical internship, should not allowed to do their Post graduation and they complete their MBBS degree.

The compulsory rotating Internship can be completed within two years of passing the final year MBBS examination or FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) or NEXT (National Exit Test) Step-1 exam.

All Medical Graduates from Indian Medical Colleges should complete their full period of compulsory rotating internship training (CRMI) in the institution where they have pursued their MBBS degree.
