Government Medical College, Kottayam began operating in December 1962 as the third faculty of medicine administered by the government in Kerala. The Medical college that initially operated at the District Hospital, Kottayam, from 1962 to 1970 was transferred to Arpookara in April 1970.
In 1975, all clinical departments moved to the newly built campus in Arpookara, now called Gandhinagar. The same year, the nearby ESI Hospital was taken to start the children’s hospital: Children’s Health Institute. In 1985 a new administrative B block was started. In 1996, block C that houses the departments of Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology and the Central Library was added.
The MBBS course is a four and a half year period followed by a one year compulsory rotating residential internship.
The lasting 12-month internship includes short courses in community health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, child health, orthopedics, emergency medicine, and various specialties. All these are according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India. Admission to the MBBS program is based on the candidate marks obtained in the NEET-UG rank held by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Kottayam Medical College offers MBBS -Under Graduate Course with total intake of 175 seats annually and these are divided as 15% All India quota and 85% Kerala State Quota.
Admission Procedure and Eligibility
Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. The maximum age limit to Study MBBS course is 25 years. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or biotechnology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for OBC Category)
Admission Procedure: It is compulsory for medical enthusiasts to appear for the National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after 12th grade who wish to get MBBS admission. All the Government, Private, Central and Deemed Universities will be based on NEET scores and the seats for all colleges / institutions / universities will be offered through counselling based on the eligibility Score/Rank, Preferences of colleges and seats available.
Admission to Govt Medical college,Kottayam is done through All India Medical Counselling as All India quota 15 % and remaining through Kerala State medical counseling as State quota 85% conducted by state medical authorities.

The total library area has occupied 2400 sq.m. This Library is fully air-conditioned and working hours of library starting from 8 am to 8 pm. Stack room and Reading rooms are available in this Library. This college has inside and outside reading room for students each of these having capacity for 300 students. Reading room for staff is also available in the Library.
GMC library has a good collection of 11000 books with 22 Indian journals and 274 foreign journals and 25 internet nodes. Central photography section are available in the College. Well trained staffs and well equipped instruments are available in this photography section.
Examination and Lecture halls
Kottayam Medical College has an Examination hall an area covers 200 Sq.m with seating capacity for 250 students. There is 10 Lecture theaters available in the campus. Out of these, 6 halls for Medical college with student capacity of 180 and 4 for Hospital with scale of 150 capacity. All the Lecture hall with adequate facilities of Audio Video aids. In Addition, the common room available with attached toilet for both boys and girls.
Government Medical College, Kottayam hostel situated within the campus. This hostel having good water facilities and hygienic hostel campus. GMC hostel is fully furnished with air conditioned visitor room,air conditioned study room with internet & computer, Mess with hygienic food and toilet facility.
Kottayam College hostel has 201 rooms for UG students each room shared with 3 students, 78 rooms for interns each has 2 persons. It also has the resident for PG students that occupy 100% capacity. Residential quarters are there for teaching and non teaching staffs. Teaching staff quarters has the capacity for 89 numbers. Non teaching staff quarters has the capacity for 46 numbers. GMC has 131 rooms for Nurses.

Its intensive care occupied 48 beds for Patients. GMC hospital doing 44 major surgical operations, 47 minor surgical operations.
