Government Medical College, Kozhikode was established in 1957 as the second medical school in Kerala, also known as Calicut medical College. It is a first level medical school in the state, located in the city of Kozhikode in Kerala. Since then, the institution has become an important medical education center in the state. Since its modest beginning the college has grown steadily for more than 57 years. The annual intake of undergraduate students has increased from 50 to 250.
GMC, Kozhikode’s main hospital was commissioned in 1966 and currently has more strength in bedded as the largest bed hospital counted in the country. Family medicine starts for the first time in the country’s government medical colleges and the Department of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care starts for the first time in the government Medical colleges in the state.

The MBBS course is a four and a half year period followed by a one year compulsory rotating residential internship.
The lasting 12-month internship includes short courses in community health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, child health, orthopedics, emergency medicine and various specialties. All these are according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India. Admission to the MBBS program is based on the candidate marks obtained in the NEET-UG rank held by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Kozhikode Medical College offers MBBS -Under Graduate Course with total intake of 250 seats annually and these are divided as 15% All India quota and 85% Kerala State Quota.
Admission Procedure and Eligibility
Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. The maximum age limit to Study MBBS course is 25 years. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or biotechnology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for OBC Category)
Admission Procedure: It is compulsory for medical enthusiasts to appear for the National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after 12th grade who wish to get MBBS admission. All the Government, Private, Central and Deemed Universities will be based on NEET scores and the seats for all colleges / institutions / universities will be offered through counselling based on the eligibility Score/Rank, Preferences of colleges and seats available.
Admission to Govt Medical college, Kozhikode is done through All India Medical Counselling as All India quota 15 % and remaining through Kerala State medical counseling as State quota 85% conducted by state medical authorities.

Government Medical College, Kozhikode has an extra ordinary infrastructure with lecture theatre complex, Geriatric block, womens’ hostel, Flats for junior residents and flat for faculty. Almost all departments and offices of the medical library, college and hospital are provided with computer facilities.
GMC Kozhikode Library was built up with 4000sq.m. This college has inside and outside reading room for students each of these having capacity 250. Reading room for staff is also available in the Library with 50 seating capacity. GMC library has a good collection of 50000 books with 9 Indian journals and 15 foreign journals. It also has 25 computers with Internet facility. Central photography section are available in the College which has well trained staffs and well equipped instruments.
Examination and Lecture halls
There are 3 examination halls are available that was built within 1000sq.m has capacity for 300 persons. Totally GMC Kozhikode has 7 Lecture Theater. Out of theses, Four halls are used by the Medical College and another 3 halls are used by the hospital that has the capacity for 300each. These are fully Gallery type with Audio Video aids.
Kozhikode Medical College hostel has separate hostel facilities for boys and girls within the campus. These rooms are well furnished with attached toilets and has a hygienic Mess facilities. Hostels are available with individual and shared rooms. Clean and Air conditioned rooms offer beds, wardrobes, study tables and chairs.
GMC hostels having the capacity for 1068 UG students, 250 capacity for interns, 137 capacity for PG students and 198 capacity for Nurses. It also has the Residential Quarters for Teaching staff and Non teaching staff with a seating capacity of 48 and 152 vice versa.These hostels are having good water facilities and comfortable toilet facilities. There are also common rooms are available for boys and girls.
Kozhikode Medical College Ground has a football stadium. It is located on the campus of the college. Kozhikode District Sports Council and Kozhikode Corporation built the stadium for the 35th National Games. The stadium hosts football matches with EMS Stadium.
Kozhikode Medical College has the good recreation room with Music, Television, Gymnasium, Indoor and Outdoor games for students co curricular activities.
GMC, Kozhikode college has a Super Specialty Complex with CT Scan, MRI Scan, an Artificial Joint Center, Accident Emergency Services Complex, Samraksha Kendram, and Visrama Kendram were later added to this institution. Kozhikode Medical College hospital was started in 1966 with 1183 beds. It was later supplemented in 1975 by the Maternity and Child Health Institute has 610 beds, the Savitri Devi Sabu Memorial Cancer Institute has 101 beds and the Chest Diseases Institute. The current bed strength is 3025. In that, MCH occupied 1510 beds, IMCH occupied 1100 beds, SSP occupied 240 beds, ICT occupied 100 beds, Sports Medicine occupied 15 beds, New Psychiatry Block occupied 20 beds and Hemato-Oncology occupied 40 beds.
Departments and hospital Facilities:
Over the past decade, almost all modern specialized services in medical care, including kidney transplantation, have been developed in the hospital. A well-equipped cardiac catheterization laboratory and telecombolt treatment are already in the hospital. A well-equipped MCI accredited center for medical education technology is in operation, serving 12 medical colleges.
Three new departments were added to the of the college, which would have long-standing rhythms in the daily operation of this college. These are the Department of Neonatology, Emergency and Critical Care Medicine and Family Medicine.

Government Medical College, Kozhikode commonly known as Calicut Medical College. Kozhikode is second largest urban agglomeration in the State of Kerala and 20th largest in the country and in addition, is one of the biggest economic hubs in Kerala. The city has a well developed transport infrastructure and the KSRTC bus stand is the largest bus station in Kerala. A large number of buses, operated mainly by private owners, travel on major routes within and around the city.
Government Medical College is located at 8km from heart of the Kozhikode city and approximately 3 KM away from NH 66 and NH 766 highways. Around a clock transport facilities are available to reach the college within 15min. The Kozhikode Railway Station is one of major rail junction in Kerala and can Good connectivity with other states, located 10 km from the college which takes 30 minutes to travel. The city has a Calicut International Airport which is well connected with Domestic and Abroad countries, located 30 kilometers from the college and takes the travel time of 1 hour.
