- Government Kilpauk Medical College opened in 1960, is the premier medical teaching institution in South India that trains medical students every year.
- In 1924, the institute was started as a Government Indian Medical School and in 1948, the Medical School was renamed Indian College of Medicine and the G.C.I.M degree (Graduate of the College of Indigenous Medicine) was confirmed in its graduates.
- In 1960, the Integrated Medicine College became the Government Kilpauk Medical College, with an annual Girls intake of 75 students only.
- A few years later it became a co-educational institute, which takes in about 100 students annually.
