The Madras Medical College Hospital is one of the premier Institutions in the country as it was started as a small Hospital to treat the sick soldiers of the East India Company in 1664. In 1835, a private medical hall was regularized as a medical school and an order was issued for the school to be sponsored by the state and attached to the General Hospital. In 1850, the school board submitted proposals to the government to agree on the status of a College and the government granted this request and became Madras Medical College.
Madras Medical College became a center of excellence that provides training in all specialties in the field of medicine and surgery and is now one of the main institutions in the country with undergraduate, postgraduate and super specialty courses. This College has nine affiliated institutions with hospitals, each of them recognized for its excellence in health care services. The affiliated hospital of the General Government Hospital of Rajiv Gandhi has incorporated all modern and latest patient-friendly facilities, which are on par with some of the high-tech multi-specialty corporate hospitals in Tamil Nadu and neighboring states . Now Present, the hospital receives an average of 12,000 outpatients every day.
The MBBS course is a four and a half year period followed by a one year compulsory rotating residential internship. The lasting 12-month internship includes short courses in community health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, child health, orthopedics, emergency medicine and various specialties. All these are according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India. Admission to the MBBS program is based on the candidate marks obtained in the NEET-UG rank held by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Madras Medical College offers various UG and PG medical courses to interested students as around 58 courses across 5 streams namely Medical, Nursing, Paramedical, Pharmacy, Science and across 10 degrees like MBBS, MD, BSc, BPT, B.Pharm etc. Total annual intake seats for UG MBBS is 250.
Admission Procedure and Eligibility
Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. The maximum age limit to Study MBBS course is 25 years. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or biotechnology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for OBC Category) to study Medical Course.
Admission Procedure: It is compulsory for medical enthusiasts to appear for the National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after 12th grade who wish to get MBBS admission. All the Government, Private, Central and Deemed Universities will be based on NEET scores and the seats for all colleges / institutions / universities will be offered through counselling based on the eligibility Score/Rank, Preferences of colleges and seats available.
Admission to Madras Medical College is done through All India Medical Counselling as AIQ 15 % and balnce of 85% of MBBS Seats through Tamil Nadu State medical counselling as State Quota conducted by state medical authorities.

Madras Medical College (MMC) campus is lush green gardens and located in a picturesque environment. The institute is well equipped with all the modern amenities. The college was built in a six-storied building on land covering 325,000 square feet (30,200m) and functioning with the strength of nearly 1,250 students and 400 faculty and staff members.
The college provides the additional facilities for students within a campus which includes Library, Wi-Fi enabled lecture halls, Canteen, Transportation, Sports and games, Hostels & Bank/ATM. The MMC has a separate laboratory for each and every branch of medical sciences and it has Wi-Fi enabled lecture halls. There is a central library which has a huge collection of medical journals, books, reference sources and pamphlets. The Auditorium has fully air-conditioned with a seating capacity of 1350 for both students & Hospital Premises.
Faculty and Staff
Madras Medical College has extremely talented staff in their respective fields with full-time members of around 400. All were highly interactive staff in class as well as in the practical.
Madras Medical College has a new Central Library in an area cover of 1260 sq. mt. with the stock collection of 102538 books. The library consists of two separate rooms for Undergraduate and each one separate room for Postgraduate and Staff members.
The college has been provided Separate Hostel for both male and female students. Rooms are ventilated, clean, comfortable and well-maintained. The hostel situated in two blocks as Front and Rear, the number of rooms for each block is 152 & 134 Rooms respectively. In addition, a separate hygienic canteen in the college campus with sufficient and airy space and serves balanced and nutritious food.
The Madras Medical College has all the necessary sports facilities for the students which include full-sized cricket ground, volleyball court, A Cement basketball court, hockey and football, Throw ball court and Separate shuttle cock court. And Indoor game for the students like T.T., Chess, and carom are also available.
Madras Medical College Hospital functioning in two blocks of Tower-I is 31,559 sqm and Tower- II is 33,304 sqm. It has nearly 52 operation theatres, besides intensive care units and post-operative wards. Total no. of beds around 4000 with includes 231 beds for various ICUs and 15 beds for cancer ICU.
The Hospital services include Accident and Trauma Care Services, Ortho Trauma Care, Casualty services and Master Health Checkup. An average 12000 Outpatient visit daily for treatment and 1,00,000 for In patients were treated per year.
