Introduction

The University College of Medical Sciences(UCMS)was Established in 1971 as a Constituent College of University of Delhi by the efforts of the Health Minister of Delhi due to many students were left out and denied the opportunity to study medicine as lack of Medical colleges in Delhi. Initially, UCMS started in North Campus of Delhi University and later it was shifted to the Safdarjung Hospital in South Delhi and followed by in 1986 shifted to its present location of Dilshad Garden and associated with Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, as its teaching hospital.

The UCMS has well-experienced faculty and they’ve achieved several laurels at national and international levels for research and related activities. In addition, UCMS was the first Indian medical college to start a Medical Humanities Group and is organized in 2011 the first ‘Theatre of the Oppressed’ workshop for medical students in India.

Quick Summary

MBBS Course

UCMS Delhi offers in a medical stream at the undergraduate (UG) level and admits 150 students for the MBBS course annually. The Admissions are based upon highly competitive premedical entrance examination of NEET which is conducted by NTA. This College is affiliated with Delhi University and admission in the Under-graduate & Post Graduate is done by the Delhi University.

The college offers Medical, Paramedical courses, and caters to the health care needs for the surrounding border of East Delhi community. The UCMS is one of the three public trauma centres in Delhi and also it was network centre for the National Brain Research Centre and serves as the nodal centre for AIDS and Safdarjung Hospitals.

Admission Procedure and Eligibility

Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. The maximum age limit to Study MBBS course is 25 years. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or bio-technology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for OBC Category)

Infrastructure

The University College of Medical Sciences has a huge campus as spread over an area of 13591.80Sq.mtrs which consists of 5storied Building. The Campus infrastructure provides following facilities like a Central workshop, Hospital laboratory services unit, Animal house, Hostel complex, Medical education unit, Medical illustration, Skill Lab, Canteen and photography etc. Also, it has technological facilities which include audio-video, telemedicine, and electronic assessment.

Lecture Halls total 3(three) available with a seating capacity of 180 each and provided with a side room and a projection room. In addition, one more lecture hall with a seating capacity of 90 and all the lecture halls has equipped with motorized screens, overhead projectors, LCD projectors, DVD player and laptops for PowerPoint presentations. The halls mostly used for guest lectures, Clinical meetings, conferences/seminars/workshops, Cultural and including film shows.

Telemedicine facility available with video-conferencing and it can be linked to several institutions as well as to their primary health centres. An air-conditioned Examination hall with a seating capacity of 170 and with a side room available with equipped audio-visual facilities

Facilities

Library
The UCMS has a Central Library and is located in a separate 3 storied building of Library-cum-Conference Block adjacent to the main building of the college. The library system consists of a Central Library with other 17 Departmental Libraries, which collectively support the teaching, research and extension programmes of the college. The Central Library is well equipped with modern facilities and resources in the form of books with well collection around 17000, 130 foreign and 31 Indian journals, and 23972 back volumes of journals, 150 E-Books, 1059 theses, 1530 WHO publications, 409 CD ROMs and internet services.

The UCMS library strives to provide timely, accurate and current information, and to provide an appropriate and comfortable academic environment for the users. Also, the users can access the subscribed e-resources and other Internet resources, and separate internet room was on the first floor of the Library.

Hostel

The college has hostel facilities for UG students within a Campus of single room accommodation for both boys and girls. The Hostel complex consists of 2 building for Boys with 522 rooms and one building for Girls with 180 rooms. In addition, separate hostel facilities for PG students, Interns and Faculty of Teaching and Non Teaching staff. All rooms are well ventilated, clean with the furniture provided therein Table, Chair, Bed without a mattress and small cupboard.

Sports

Since many years the college has been maintained the heritage of the sporting activities in the name of “ARENA” which includes participating and organizing various sports events held for five days in both intra-college as well as inter-college. The college has sporting fields such as cricket, volleyball, football, basketball and shot-put and indoor games for table tennis, carrom and chess. UCMS is the only college that organizes hard-ball (leather ball) cricket tournament, which is cherished by all the participants.

Affiliated Hospitals

Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (GTB) acts as training as well as the teaching hospital for UCMS and spread over an area of 91788.76 sq.mts with 1200 beds strength. The Hospital is the prestigious and largest Hospital of Delhi which is providing health care facilities to cover East Delhi and adjoining areas of other states for needy population. The GTB Hospital is fully equipped with latest instruments and provides around a clock emergency service like CT-Scan, Hemo-dialysis and Peritoneal dialysis, Neurosurgery facilities, Burn care facilities, Thallesemia day care centre, and have 22 Major and 07 Minor Operation Theatres and trauma centre too.

The hospital has been fully computerized and integrated through LAN as all the process like OPD and IPD registration, Blood Sample collection centres, Admission and Enquiry, Lab investigation services and Medical Record Data etc..

Delhi is the capital of Indian National and its well connected to all the places like India as well as other countries. The College is Situated about 15kms away from New Delhi on Vikas Marg and close to DTC Bus Terminal of Nand Nagari & Dilshad Garden and gets frequently bus service from the city centre. The Nearest Railway Station is Anand Vihar (Delhi) 5kms from the college and Delhi International Airport is located 40kms from the college.
