- Jammu Government Medical College was established in 1972.
- Its aim is to produce knowledgeable, skilled, and competent primary care physicians in compliance with the Medical Council of India (MCI) regulations.
- The institute initially started with 50 medical graduates and soon grew to 100 undergraduates per year (UG) and now has another fifty students.
- In 1974, GMC Jammu was added to their list as a chest hospital, psychiatric and fever hospital.
- By the beginning of the second decade, the institute had begun 16 MD / MS postgraduate (PG) and 6 diploma courses.
- Also, the Institute is ready to start six full-time courses in six super specialties.
- There are approximately 350 faculty and 1000 support staff in both medical education, research, and patient care.

The Government Medical College Jammu has nearly 350 faculties and 1000 supporting staff for both in the provision of medical education, research, and patient care.
- Moreover, many of its graduates and postgraduates from this medical college are contributing to the advancement of medical research at the national and international levels.
- The auditorium with a seating capacity of 830 seats is located at the Admin block and Canteen Facilities are available separately for faculty members, students, and staff members.
- The college has one Examination Hall with 200 sitting capacity & Thirteen Lecturer Theatre are available.
A designed Photographic-cum-Audiovisual unit has been set up in the college for learning and for working on a program to disseminate information. - These units have fully equipped with the latest equipment and accessories.
GMC Jammu has a Central Library equipped with an internet facility and a seating capacity of 180 seats and arrangements have been made for four students and two postgraduates and one reading joint. - A central computer cell was established to computerize the entire faculty as an administration, accounts, and students department.
- In addition, the campus is available on campus.
- Nearly 25609 books are in college libraries and subscribers in more than 50 international and national journals 26 and have 06 Internet nodes.

- There are 5 blocks of three-storied hostel building with total rooms of 549 for Under-graduates and Post-graduates students.
- Out of these, 2 blocks are exclusively for Girls.
- All the hostels are situated within the college complex at a reaching distance of 200-500 meters.
- GMC created Opportunities for the students to develop their talent in various fields of art and culture viz., Music, Dramatics, Literature, Debates, Sports etc.

- Medical College Hospital started with 900 beds and gradually it has increased to 1700 beds including associated hospitals.

- Diagnostic facilities like MRI, Spiral CT Scan, and Cardiac Cath Lab have recently been introduced to the hospital.
