Jammu Government Medical College was established in 1972. Its aim is to produce knowledgeable, skilled and competent primary care physicians in compliance with the Medical Council of India (MCI) regulations. The institute initially started with 50 medical graduates and soon grew to 100 undergraduates per year (UG) and now has another fifty students. In 1974, GMC Jammu was added to their list as a chest hospital, psychiatric and fever hospital. By the beginning of the second decade, the institute had begun 16 MD / MS postgraduate (PG) and 6 diploma courses. Also, the Institute is ready to start six full-time courses in six super specialties.
There are approximately 350 faculty and 1000 support staff in both medical education, research and patient care. In addition, many graduates and post-graduates from this medical college contribute to the advancement of medical research at national and international level. The GMC is associated with five teaching hospitals: Jammu Medical College Hospital, CD Hospital, SMGS Hospital, Psychiatry Hospital & Dental Hospital.

The MBBS course is a four and a half year period followed by a one year compulsory rotating residential internship. The lasting 12-month internship includes short courses in community health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, child health, orthopedics, emergency medicine and various specialties. All these are according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India. Admission to the MBBS program is based on the candidate marks obtained in the NEET-UG rank held by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
GMCJammu has total available seats for UG MBBS course is 180 which is reserved as each 50% for Male & Female. All 100% seats will be allotted through state quota for students from J&K, as they aren’t entitled to the 15 percent AIQ seats.
Admission Procedure and Eligibility
Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. The maximum age limit to Study MBBS course is 25 years. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or bio-technology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for OBC Category)
The Admissions for above courses are based on Entrance Examination conducted by Board of Professional Entrance Examination (BOPEE), Jammu & Kashmir. Out of Total seats for UG course is reserved for 50% of Male & Female and 100% seats will be allotted through state quota for students from J&K, as they aren’t entitled to the 15 percent AIQ seats.

Auditorium & Exam Hall
The auditorium with seating Capacity of 830 seats which is located at Admin block and Canteen Facilities available separately for faculty members, students and staff members. The Colleges has one Examination Hall with 200 sitting capacity & Thirteen Lecturer Theatre are available.
A designed Photographic-cum-Audiovisual unit has set up in the college for learning and for working on a program to disseminate information. These units have fully equipped with the latest equipment and accessories.
GMC Jammu has a Central Library equipped with an internet facility and a seating capacity of 180 seats and arrangements have been made for four students and two postgraduates and one reading joint. A central computer cell was established to computerize the entire faculty as an administration, accounts and students department. In addition, campus is available on campus. Nearly 25609 books are in college libraries and subscribers in more than 50 international and national journals 26, and have 06 Internet nodes. The library immediately locates and locates any publications as a library computerized by the SLIM software management system.
There are 5 blocks of three storied hostel building with total rooms of 549 for Under-graduates and Post-graduates students. Out of these, 2 blocks are exclusively for Girls. All the hostels are situated with the college complex at a reaching distance of 200-500 meters.
GMC created Opportunities for the students to develop their talent in various fields of art and culture viz., Music, Dramatics, Literature, Debates, and Sports etc. The students are encouraged to undertake social activities.
Medical College Hospital started with 900 beds and gradually it has increased to 1700 beds including associated hospitals. The Strength of doctors including Faculty is 800 and Paramedical Staff including supervisory staff was 1000 and additionally 1500 employees working as Class-III & IV with all the associated colleges.
The Diagnostic facilities like MRI, Spiral CT Scan and Cardiac Cath Lab. have recently been introduced to the hospital. The hospital has also developed the infrastructure for open heart surgery and has started performing an operation. Also, It has established a Coronary care unit with Echocardiography, Holter, TMT, Image Intensifier and facilities for regular implantation of temporary and permanent Pacemakers. A Dialysis unit with latest Haemodialysis Machines’ EEG machines for Neurology patients; Neurosurgery Unit with backup of Spiral CT Scan and ICU for Head Injury cases; A Urodynamic Lab. and Instruments with Image Intensifier for Endourological operations; A spinal injury cases and facilities for Arthroscopy in Orthopedics Department; An Endoscopy section with facilities for upper and lower G.I.
