Quick Summary

• Government Medical College(GMC), Srinagar was established in 1959 and its oldest medical college and the First in Jammu & Kashmir State.
• It has a leading role in contributing a major portion of healthcare to the State and producing many renowned and leading clinicians to all over the world.
• In 1966, GMC Srinagar started PG Courses in Pre-Clinical subjects and followed them by training courses of Para-Medical staff like Radiographers, Lab-Technicians, Lab-Attendants, Pharmacist, Nurses, and Sanitary Inspectors.
• The year before the inauguration of Government Medical College Srinagar, SMHS (Shri Maharaja Hari Singh) Hospital as a Government-owned General Hospital to provide patient care to needy patients which were established in 1948.
• After GMC Srinagar was Established on the same campus, S.M.H.S hospital became a major teaching institution for undergraduate and postgraduate medical training in all allied specialities of Medicine, Surgery, and Gynecology.
• Now GMC Srinagar functioning with 22 departments.
• The Doctors, and Medical Technologists produced by the GMC Srinagar have earned worldwide recognition and renown not only for their excellence but also for their commitment and service.

Infrastructure

• GMC Srinagar has spread over an area of 46acre and which includes Medical College, Hospitals and Hostel & Residential Complex.
• The total campus is dived into seven parts and spread over within 5kms.
• The college campus has a 07 Examination hall with area covering each 250Sq.mts and capacity 250persons.
• The Lecture Theatre 07nos are available in College and o3nos in Hospital.
• All the theatres are Gallery type and well equipped with AV aids and seating capacity of 180-250persons.
• Medical College Srinagar having a well-experienced faculty of 250 doctors as Professor, Associate Professor and Lecturers for teaches in 22 different departments and runs 07 hospitals.
• In addition to they are well planned and conducted Chittaranjan Mobile Hospital, Lectures, Practical, demonstrations, and clinics round the year.
• Nearly 18000 books are in the college Library and subscribers to more than 270 International as well as National journals and also have over 14000 bound Journals.
• The Library has immediate tracing and retrieval of any publication as the library is computerized by SLIM software management system.

Hostel

• GMC Srinagar has well maintained Hostel facilities available within the campus and total of 04 Blocks, each two for male/ female students and the total rooms are 130.
• The Hostel with all the entertainment facilities consisting of a TV room, Table Tennis room, and a reading room.
• CASS (Cultural, Academic, Social, and Sports) welfare union is the official students union of GMC Srinagar.
• The above four subcommittees having members from the faculty and are headed by their respective Chairpersons.
• On every year CASS general elections are held on December to select respective committee secretaries, President, and Vice president.

Affiliated Hospitals

• In 1959, the bed strength at SMHS hospital was 750 and over the years it has been increased to the present strength of 1038.
• An average of 2000-3000 people from the O.P department daily found Medical relief.
• There are 07 associated hospitals linked with GMC Srinagar i.e.G.B Pant, Children Hospital, Lal Ded Maternity Hospital, Psychiatric Diseases Hospital, Chest Diseases Hospital, Barzulla and Chitranjan Mobile Hospital with a total bed strength of 2,150.
• Nearly 100 patients stay in these hospitals as in-patients as well as floor patients.
• Also, it’s adequately equipped with 9 surgical theatres and delivery rooms.
• Daily 5-7 thousand people for getting Medical relief through the O.P.departments.
• Rural Health Training Centres : RHTC- Khag-Budgam; Distance from the college 35kms.
• Urban Health Training Centres : UHTC- Nishat-Hazartbal; Distance from the college 12kms.

• The college Located in Srinagar, the northernmost city of India and the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
• There are a number of lakes and swamps in and around the city also the city is known for its natural environment, gardens, waterfronts, and houseboats.
• The city is well connected by Road with other cities like Jammu, Delhi, and Chandigarh, and having Srinagar domestic airport (Sheikh ul Alam Airport) with connections to all major cities in India.
• There are no operational railway stations in Srinagar.
• Jammu is the nearest railway station, at a distance of 290 KM.
