The Tirunelveli Medical college started in the year 1965 with 75 admissions, it increased the graduate admissions to 100 in the year 1973. The Tirunelveli government medical college is recognised by MCI(Medical Council of India) during 1977. Later during 2001, undergraduate medical seats were again increased to 150.

Government Medical College, Tirunelveli is affiliated to tamil nadu Dr MGR Medical University. It teaches 1800 students in graduate, post graduate and diploma courses. Except ‘All India quota’, all other seats are filled only by candidates who are native of Tamilnadu. There is no provision for foreign nationals to study at this medical college.
Tirunelveli Government Medical College runs undergraduate medical course, postgraduate medical courses, super speciality course, paramedical and nursing courses.

The MBBS course is a four and a half year period followed by a one year compulsory rotating residential internship. The lasting 12-month internship includes short courses in community health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, child health, orthopedics, emergency medicine and various specialties. All these are according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India. Admission to the MBBS program is based on the candidate marks obtained in the NEET-UG rank held by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
MBBS Course has a total of 250 seats which are divided as 15% All India quota and 85% Tamilnadu state quota. The course duration is 4 and half years.
Admission Procedure and Eligibility
Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. The maximum age limit to Study MBBS course is 25 years. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or bio-technology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for OBC Category)
Admission Procedure: It is compulsory for medical enthusiasts to appear for the National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after 12th grade who wish to get MBBS admission. All the Government, Private, Central and Deemed Universities will be based on NEET scores and the seats for all colleges / institutions / universities will be offered through counselling based on the eligibility Score/Rank, Preferences of colleges and seats available.
Admission to GMC, Tirunelveli is based on the score obtained in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test(NEET) conducted by National Testing Agency(NTA). Students can take admission in this medical institution either through All India Medical Counselling as All India Quota of 15% of MBBS seatsand balance through Tamilnadu State medical counselling as State Quota of 85% which is conducted by state medical authorities.

Tirunelveli Govt Medical College is spread over campus area of 228 acres which contains college buildings, hospitals and hostel buildings. The college has 24/7 Central Medical Library with floor space of 3000 square metres which is located very close to the hostel buildings. The total seating capacity of library stands at 300 seats. The library contains 24000 books with 70 Indian journals and 35 foreign journals.
TGMC has big auditorium of more than 2000 square metres accommodating more than 750 seats and lecture halls of size 15000 square metes. This medical college has a strong tradition in cricket, football, hockey, volleyball, badminton, throwball, kho-kho, shuttle, table tennis,etc and track 7 field events.
Tirunelveli Government Medical College and Hospital has 3 Ladies Hostel buildings having 8000 square metres and 4 Gentlemen block buildings having more than 5000 square metres each. The total hostel has close to 200 rooms with accommodation capacity for 650 students
In hostel buildings, more than 100 students can dine at the same time. Most of the rooms accommodate 3 students per room. The hostel block has TV hall and a well equipped gymnasium for both boys and girls. It is equipped with CCTV and it is under the camera surveillance.
The hostel has a student’s cafeteria run by the students, with a well maintained dining hall which can accommodate 100 students at a time. The cafeteria is open for breakfast from 7am to 10am in the morning for lunch it opens between 12 noon and 2 pm, for dinner between 7pm and 9pm.
The college includes two Parking Sheds for bikes, laundry, purified drinking water facility, recreation hall and prayer hall along with a separate Visitors hall. It has General Stores for Stationery, Snacks and cosmetics.
