Dr. Ida Scudder is the founder of Christian Medical College as sensitivity for the spiritual and physical dimensions of human suffering at same she was not on built a mere medical college but the Kingdom of God. So it was started as a one-bedded clinic-cum-dispensary in 1900 and today this institute, one of national and international fame, includes a network of primary, secondary, tertiary and Quaternary care hospitals, with around 3000 beds spread across six campuses in and around Vellore. In 1918, Dr Ida Scudder started the LMP programme in response to the desperate need for medical doctors in India, and later it was upgraded to the MBBS course in 1942. It has one of the top-ranked medical colleges in the country on producing compassionate, professionally excellent and ethically sound healthcare professionals.

MBBS Course

The MBBS course is a four and a half year period followed by a one year compulsory rotating residential internship. The lasting 12-month internship includes short courses in community health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, child health, orthopaedics, emergency medicine and various specialities. All these are according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India. Admission to the MBBS program is based on the candidate marks obtained in the NEET-UG rank held by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

The Christian Medical College offers an extensive range of UG, PG and Higher Speciality courses in Medicine, Nursing, Allied health sciences, and related disciplines. The annual intake of Undergraduates of MBBS is 100 and 355 for Post Graduates students.

Admission Procedure and Eligibility

Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or biotechnology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of OBC/SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for PH Category) to study Medical Course.

Admission Procedure: It is compulsory for medical enthusiasts to appear for the National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after 12th grade who wish to get MBBS admission. All the Government, Private, Central and Deemed Universities will be based on NEET scores and the seats for all colleges / institutions / universities will be offered through counselling based on the eligibility Score/Rank, Preferences of colleges and seats available.

Admission to Christian Medical College of total 100 seats is distributed as follows:
a. All India Open Category – 16 seats.
(i) One candidate will be selected by the Government of India (separate requests for obtaining prescribed applications are to be addressed to the authorities).
(ii) Twenty percent (3 seats) of the open seats shall be reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Tribes (SC/ST).

b. Minority Network Category – 74 seats
Up to 74 seats will be reserved for the Minority Network Category Please check the admission page on the CMC website for updated information. Minority category students should produce proof for minority network category and Baptism/Church Membership/Religious minority certificate.

c. CMC Vellore Staff Quota – 10 seats
Up to 10 seats will be reserved for the staff of CMC Vellore based on the merit.

Christian Medical College Vellore has allotted 16 seats for All India Open Category for MBBS admission and seats are distributed category wise as following OC-12;  SC/ST-03 & 1 Central Pool.

The remaining of  74 Seats are allotted by college management as Sponsored candidates which is filled through Minority Network of Christian Churches/Organisations. Another 10 seats are reserved for wards of staff of CMC Vellore.

The Medical College Campus built in 1932 is spread over a 200-acre wooded site at the foot of College Hill. It remains, as originally envisaged, a residential community where students and staff can study and reside in serene and beautiful surroundings. The central college chapel opens on to a sunken garden and connects with the Women’s Hostel and various classrooms through peaceful stone corridors. Interspersed among the tall trees and winding roads are other hostels, administrative, teaching and research facilities, staff residences, guest houses, playing fields and more.

Faculty and Staff

CMC vellore has resulted in an enviable list of over 900 Medical, Nursing and Allied Health Science faculty in every department. The faculty has been developing with every support to specialise and continually upgrade skills and practice.


In 1960 Christian Medical College was established The Department of Library Services thus support and serve the medical community. The library functions in two different locations as The Dodd Memorial Library at the Hospital campus and the Gault Library in the College campus at Bagayam. The library has a collection of ebooks, full-text electronic journals databases, Abstracts of the Thesis, the Institutional Repositories and other web-based portals and links.



The Bagayam campus has the Women’s and Men’s Hostels for MBBS students, the Fitch Hostel for Allied Health women students, the Dorothy Joske Hostel for Allied Health men students and the Modale International Hostel for elective / visitor-observer students from overseas. Fully residential, both faculty and students live on the same campus.

The CMC has various amenities like institutional canteens, ATMs, post offices, provision shops, gift stores and so on, in its premises.


Christian Medical College Vellore has a large playground for athletics, football, hockey, and cricket is located at one end of the campus. There are two state-of-the-art outdoor basketball courts and basketball continues to be one of the most popular games on the campus. Volleyball courts, indoor shuttle courts, and two tennis courts are also available. Annual sports and games are conducted by the college for students and staff in addition to an annual intercollegiate games festival and several friendly staff-student matches.

The Main hospital is situated in the Town Campus with the vast majority of the clinical departments are functioning. It has a large 2858 (Including Peripherals) bed hospital with 144 specialized departments/units and is in a position to provide specialized medical care to patients for requiring treatments.

Christian Medical College and Hospital is located in Vellore city in Tamilnadu state. The city is located on the banks of the Palar River in the north-eastern part of Tamil Nadu and is 101 km west of Chennai city limits & 200 km east of Bangalore city limits. Vellore is well connected to major cities of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

The city’s two bus terminus is New and Old, and the Medical College is located 4 km from New Bus Stand in a 15-minute drive. Similarly, it has three major railway stations, namely Katpadi Junction, Vellore Cantonment and Vellore Town and the Main one is Vellore-Kattpadi Junction, 5 km north of CMC Hospital. The nearest airport to the college is the Chennai International Airport which is 128 km away with 2 hours drive.
