The Government Mohan Kumaramangala Medical College, the renowned institution of the steel city of Salem, was opened on 1986 by upgrading the existing District Government Hospital which was established in 1917 on a 150 acre land. Its mainly Serve the sick and needy people in Salem and adjoining districts. The foundation of Mohan Kumaramangalam Government Medical College was laid in Salem, by the Indian Prime Minister in 1988 and Admission of students to the first batch was undertaken in 1990.
A non-teaching headquarters hospital, Salem has been converted into a teaching unit of Mohan Kumaramangalam Government Medical College Hospital which is now well equipped with modern facilities and qualified staff. The Super Specialty Hospital was opened in 2005 on the existing hospital premises, funded by the state government and has been started functioning since 2006. It has all sophisticated and modern equipment parallel to private hospitals.
The MBBS course is a four and a half year period followed by a one year compulsory rotating residential internship. The lasting 12-month internship includes short courses in community health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, child health, orthopedics, emergency medicine and various specialties. All these are according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India. Admission to the MBBS program is based on the candidate marks obtained in the NEET-UG rank held by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Mohan Kumaramangalam Government Medical College offers MBBS Course has a total of 100 seats annually which are divided as 15% All India Quota(AIQ) and remaining 85% for Tamilnadu State Quota(SQ).
Admission Procedure and Eligibility
Eligibility: 17 years of age or above as on 31-Dec of the admission year. The maximum age limit to Study MBBS course is 25 years. All Higher Secondary School Students with 10+2 in science stream including biology or biotechnology along with Physics and Chemistry with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible(In case of SC/ST, 40% in board exams; 45% for OBC Category) to study Medical Course.
Admission Procedure: It is compulsory for medical enthusiasts to appear for the National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after 12th grade who wish to get MBBS admission. All the Government, Private, Central and Deemed Universities will be based on NEET scores and the seats for all colleges / institutions / universities will be offered through counselling based on the eligibility Score/Rank, Preferences of colleges and seats available.
Admission to MK Government Medical College is done through All India Medical Counselling as 15% for All India Quota(AIQ) and balance through Tamil Nadu State medical counselling of 85% State Quota(SQ) conducted by State Medical authorities.

Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College campus is spread over 180 acres with beautiful landscapes. A total of 150 acres available for college buildings have been built. The Medical College Hospital and OPD buildings are built on an area of 30 acres, with the remaining areas being hostels. The Government Medical College has a separate hostel and residential complex for more than 15,100 square meters of students and staff.
The MKMC has an Examination hall with a total area of 718 square meters and with a capacity of 400 students. The medical college has a total of seven lecture halls. The college building has five lecture halls with a capacity of 120 students each and one with 350 students capacity with E-learning facilities. The hospital building has a lecture hall with 150 seats. These lecture halls are built as a gallery type with air conditioning and audio and video facilities. There are 100 square meters of separate common rooms in each of the attached toilet facilities.
1600 sqq. Ft. The library is designed with plenty of natural light, with an atmosphere that supports quiet individual and group study and entertaining reading. This library has fully air-conditioned facilities. There are two reading rooms inside and out. Inside it has 140 seating capacity and outside reading room has a capacity of 100 students. There are separate reading rooms for PG students and staff. The library has a total of 13,837 medical textbooks. 74 Indian newspapers and 33 foreign newspapers are available in the e-library section, which contains 25 computers and other features. The Library is open every day a week from the morning at 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
The Hostel of the GMKMC began in 1990, excluding a large dining hall with a common hall, TV hall, gym, office room, library, housekeeper room, and modern kitchen. The hotel has a central open court courtyard as a rectangular section of the 4-acre complex. All sites have power backup with a diesel generator. The accommodation provides a peaceful atmosphere for students to stay and study.
The women’s Hostel is available with 79 rooms and providing 158 accommodation facilities for students and the Men’s hostel has 106 rooms with 212 accommodation facilities for students. There are separate PG Hostel is available with 88 rooms and Interns hostel with 100 rooms and all facilities. Separate teaching and non-teaching Staff quarters are available with all sorts of facilities.
Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital is the teaching hospital of this Government Medical College. The Regional Center for Obs & Gyn and Pediatric Hospital is built by the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s Residence. Patient restroom with air conditioning facility built under the legislator’s Funds is available in the pediatric and Obs & Gyn fields to prevent any illegal activities.
There are super-specialty departments with a centralized air conditioning block with power insulation, modular operation theater 108 ambulance service. Poor patients get a free mortgage van. Blood Bank with separation of components. This Hospital has 1272 beds, these are divided into the respective medical care departments. Approximately more than 3800 outpatients are visiting here for treatment. There is separate laboratories section available for Pathology, Hematology, Microbiology, and BioChemistry. There are sixteen Operation theatres available with 14 Major and 2 Minor Operation Facilities.

Mohan Kumaramangalam Government Medical College is Situated in Salem City. Salem city is Tamil Nadu’s main textile center, with over 125 spinning, weaving and garment factories. Salem city has a two Bus terminus as Old & New Bus Stand, the Medical College has 1.4km distance from the Old Bus station with 10 min travel time. From New bus stand at a distance of 2.9 km and can reach within 10 min through Sankagiri – Salem Main Road.
Salem Rail station is one of main Railway Junction in the state and is Good connectivity with other major cities in the country which is 6.7 km from the medical college with travel duration of 20min. Salem has Domestic Airport, situated 20km from the College, the service is yet to be started. The nearest major airports are Tiruchirappalli at a distance of 152 km and Coimbatore of 148 km.
